Truth or Loyalty
So I’m at work a couple of days ago and a CPT calls me from another unit. She was asking me a bunch of questions about a guy that used to be in my squad. This guy got kicked out of our unit months and months ago because he wasn’t performing. He was a good enough guy, he just didn’t belong here. We sent him to the regular army and now he’s being brought up on charges for something. I dunno what.
Anyways the CPT was asking me all these questions about him.
Describe his personality. “Real laid back.”
Has he ever shown any violent behavior? “No of course not.”
Did he ever confide in you? “No not really.” (Like I’m going to tell her)
I’m not sure what he did but I was really torn on how to answer. She started asking very specific questions about combat. Things we had seen. Stuff like that. I just reverted to the textbook answer. “I don’t feel comfortable talking about that over the phone.” “That’s privileged information, ma’am.” Stuff like that. I was never great buddies with this guy, but he was in my squad. I feel a certain loyalty to him. I also feel that if he did do something wrong he should be tried with the truth. My big concern is that anything I say will be taken out of context or blown out of proportion. I don’t even know anything ground shaking about him, so it’s kind of a moot point. What’s got me thinking though, is what if it was one of my boys in trouble? How would I answer? What is the right thing? The truth or loyalty? I suppose it’s all shades of grey. How strong is the loyalty? How important is the truth? I’m erring towards loyalty because I’m sure my guys would all have these same hesitations if I was in trouble.

Ross,
1st Welcome back! 2nd, I currently work for a JAG reservist, who is a serious but very fair and thorough lawyer. She doesn't pre-judge and starts from the facts. The questions she asked were standard. Mind you I know this only because when she away doing her reserve duty her blackberry died and I had to forward all her work email (some of it from FT military colleagues) and got to see how the process works.
It isn't easy for civilians to answer these same questions; the difference is we don't struggle with or are tormented by the loyalty issue.
Hope this puts things in perspective.

It's good to know. I guess I just don't like talking about unit business to anyone outside the unit.
